Health Kentucky
Recognizes Volunteer Hospitals During a
National Hospital Week
Every
hospital in Kentucky donates time to network
of caring
LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 1,
2002 Every hospital in Kentucky contributes
to the care of thousands of Kentuckians
without health insurance through the statewide
program Health Kentucky.
In celebration of NationalHospital Week, May 12-18, 2002, Health
Kentucky wants to recognize the 127 acute,
psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals
that donate free services to the uninsured
through the Health Kentucky program.
"As early as 1985,
every hospital in Kentucky committed to
taking care of the states uninsured
individuals," said Michael Rust, president
and CEO of the Kentucky Hospital Association.
"Thats when the Kentucky Hospital
Association established the Kentucky Hospital
Care Program in conjunction with Health
Kentucky. For nearly 20 years now, the states
hospitals have made an enormous contribution
to their communities by taking care of individuals
who cant afford health insurance.
Without an effort of this magnitude, Health
Kentucky wouldnt be able to provide
access to the medical care available only
in a hospital setting."
Since 1984, Health Kentucky
has coordinated access to free health care
for more than 200,000 citizens who live
below the poverty level, do not qualify
for government programs and cannot afford
health insurance. Individuals can call 800-633-8100
to apply to Health Kentucky, a statewide,
non-profit organization. Once a person is
approved, he or she remains eligible for
one year to visit volunteer doctors, dentists,
hospitals, home health agencies and hospices,
and obtain free prescriptions donated by
pharmaceutical companies. An individual
can reapply for another year of eligibility
at the end of the first year.
